SOCIAL-CULTURAL STRUCTURE INTEGRATION OF TURKISH

The issue that language is either integrated with the social structure or independent from the social structure is seen as a field of discussion for scientists. There are examples of language being independent of social structure, as well as examples showing that it is integrated and that language has a strong influence on society. For example, although the Azerbaijani people use Turkish to a large extent, in their social structure they introduce themselves as Azeri, not Turkish. However, there are societies in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Iraq and even Crimea, who regard their languages and social identities as one, even though they belong to different states.

We cannot deal with language-social structure integration by isolating it from other factors. Language social structure integration is affected by the history, religious beliefs, ethnic amalgamations, and being under common state-empire structures. If we take the subject for Turkish, you can consider it as an ethnic race but it goes beyond the framework of the race. Turkish is not a state language, but an imperial language, a language of history that transcends the empire. Undoubtedly, the Ottoman Empire did not have an official language that would encompass all the lands in today's sense. However, all correspondence from Egypt to Vienna, from Mecca to Medina and England were made with Ottoman Turkish, where Turkish grammar gained weight.

There were thousands of words Ottoman Turkish from Turkish to French and Greek, and with this feature, it was an imperial language that reflected the mix of ethnic societies. With the emergence of nation-states after the first world war, Ottoman Turkish was shrunk, and emerged in Turkish, similar to the contraction in the geographical and physical sphere. However, Turkish is still Ottoman in one aspect. Because Ottoman was not only an imperial language, but a civilization language, and our society saw itself as the essential element of that civilization. Geographical withdrawal and linguistic withdrawal did not bring about any change in our civilization. So Turkish should also be a civilization language. The efforts of some people want to isolate Turkish from its religious and social content and make it a language of ethnic origin are doomed to fail. For us, Turkish is a language that is compatible with our social and cultural structure, integrated with our religious beliefs and life. Assuming Turkish is a colorless language and detaching it from our values and beliefs will be the greatest evil to do to this nation.
